Special Exhibits at the Quilt Show

Virginia's Beautiful Waters

Betsy Stone, 2016 Quilt Show Chair, announced the theme of the 2016 Quilt Show challenge is "Virginia's Beautiful Waters".  The challenge is to create a quilt that best expresses your idea of the theme.  It can be an art, pictorial quilt or a quilt in "theme related" colors i.e., blues for ocean, white & green for waterfalls in the woods, green & brown for "Dismal Swamp", etc.

This exhibit will showcase members' art, pictorial or traditional quilts that best expresses the idea of Virginia's beautiful waters.

John Kelly of the Washington Post, featured one of these quilts titled "The Bunny Man" in his column on February 24, 2016. To learn more, read the article

Inspired by the National Parks

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016, 148 fiber artists, several who are members of Quilters Unlimited, created original art quilts to depict landscapes, flora and fauna of the 59 National Parks.

A portion of these quilts were shown at the International Quilt Festival this past fall in Houston, and all of the quilts then were exhibited at Road to California in January. This is the debut of the entire collection of 177 quilts on the east coast! The collection will continue to travel to a variety of venues through 2017. To learn more about this project, check out the website: www.npscentennialquilts.com or order the book

The quilts to the right were made to honor Rocky Mountain National Park. Barbara Hollinger made the landscape, Nancy Evans did the aspen, and Catherine Kane did the mountain lion. The quilts in the Inspired by the National Parks collection offer a wide range of styles, techniques, interpretations, artistry and materials.

Come to the Annual Meeting Saturday June 4 at 5:30pm
It's so easy this year!

QU is excited to welcome Susan Carlsona nationally and internationally known quilt artist who will teach classes on her fabric collage technique and be the speaker at the Annual Meeting.  She is the author of Free-Style Quilts and Serendipity Quilts.Check out her website: https://www.susancarlson.com/Welcome.html

She has recently finished a 25-foot quilted crocodile (which luckily has no relative swimming in Virginia’s Beautiful Waters). Susan’s quilts are award winning and amazing.

The meeting will be held in the newly constructed classrooms just to the left of the Dulles Expo entrance.  It will start at 5:30, Saturday June 4, after the Quilt Show closes at 5.  The Burke guild will be providing appetizers and beverages.

There will be a short Big QU meeting with election of officers for next year and recognition of the current slate followed by a trunk show and lecture, Fabric Images, by Susan Carlson.
