Historically, a woman's expression of her artistic talents were confined mostly to the home and often to the needlearts in particular. This lecture explores quilt making in the contexts of the family, of groups of women, and of society as a whole.

Since the 1970s, antique quilts have taken on a new role as they began to be appreciated as art objects. The talents of anonymous quiltmakers of the 1800s are discussed in this context in terms of color, balance, design, etc.

Musician and quilter Eliza Hardy Jones traveled across the US and Northwest Russia interviewing women and gathering their songs. Each Song Quilt celebrates the contributions of “women’s work” to national identity, global culture, and shared traditions.

Nicki will present a trunk show of her quilts going back 30 years to present day. She’ll talk about the evolution of her style and experiences that have influenced her work.

Nicki has been a member of the Burke Chapter of QU since 2005. She loves quilting in all its various forms and describes her style as “versatile”.  Her quilts have been juried into many quilt shows and publications. She was recently honored with Artist in Residence positions in both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Shenandoah National Park - a notable achievement reflecting the significance of her work.

Nicki will teach you the basics of a fiber landscape - with a twist! The entire project will be completed in a hand embroidery hoop. She will display how layering fabrics of different color, size, and value can result in a dimensional art quilt. Basic embroidery stitches will be used to secure the landscape and add texture. The hoop acts as both a tool to keep your fabric pieces tight, and a frame from which to hang the finished project. Be forewarned, these are addictive!
