    Sew together with Estelle!

    Mystery Sew Along 2024-2025

Are you ready for a new adventure! RQU is hosing a mystery Sew Along! We are so excited and can't wait for you to join us!

We are working with a famous quilt designer, published author, and fabric designer. But that's as much information as you will get from us, because we want to the quilt design to be a surprise at the end!

Because the pattern is the intellectual property of the designer, it costs $5.00 to join up. Once you join, you will receive the fabric requirements, as well as the monthly mystery clues. At the end of the mystery, you will receive a paper pattern for the entire quilt.

Clues will be released by email on the 15th of each month. Fabric requirements will be sent out Sept. 15, and our first clue will come out October 15th!

This is a medallion style quilt with many borders.

Just so you know, Estelle is our name for the pattern, and has nothing to do with the actual quilt, or any other quilt that might be named Estelle.

    Carly Mul - Scissors Collage - Workshop - In-person - 10am to 2pm

    Scissors collage.jpg

Learn how to make Carly’s Scissors Collage. The 20” x 20” collage is perfect for a wall hanging or the centerpiece of a quilt.  See the following link for details and supplies Scissors Class v2024 details - supplies.pdf

This class is an exploration of color, texture, and composition through fabric collage. The primary goal is to create smooth, flowing lines with color, seamlessly integrating various fabric pieces so that they appear as one cohesive fabric. The process is both free and intuitive, allowing for creative expression, while requiring a keen eye for detail. Many students often comment that the class changes the way they see the world, helping them appreciate the subtle beauty in color, shape, and texture in new and exciting ways.

This is an entry level class. Perfect for scrappy quilters, the collage uses up to 50 scraps, some as small as ½”.  The scissors collage will finish to 20 inches.

The registration fee is $35 paid at the time of registration via credit card.  There is a mandatory kit fee of $17.50 (for Steam a Seam 2 and Pattern Ease) that is paid to the instructor at the class. Cash, credit, or check are accepted for this fee.

An optional fabric kit can be purchased for $28.00 if you want Carly to provide fabric for the project.  You must send an email to Mollie Weinert, weinertm@verizon.net, by 29 April saying that you want the kit and explaining what two colors you want to use.  The fabric kit fee will be paid to the instructor at the class.

Parking is available in the main lot and on the street.  Please do not use the lower parking level as that is for the pre-school.

    Lecture: The Dresden Reimagined

My journey with the Dresden block into the Modern quilt world, art quilts and publishing. How do you go from a quilt you made to a pattern to a book? I will also include a trunk show.

Bio: I have been fascinated with fabric, sewing, and quilting since the age of nine, when I took my first sewing class and won a prize for my corduroy jumper and print shirt with a necktie. When I saw an ancestor’s quilt in the Smithsonian at age thirteen, I was hooked. I taught myself to quilt from books and used cardboard templates and scissors to make my first quilt, a Log Cabin. It has been a love affair ever since.

I love using fabrics, themes, and colors from nature, although I lean more to bright fabrics with a lot of prints. Many of my works have a “tradition-with-a-twist” quality, and although I rely on inspirations from generations gone by, they also have a contemporary feel. I have dabbled in fiber art, challenges, traditional quilting, and modern quilting, and I love it all.

I have taught quilting for more than thirty years and love teaching and exploring with students as much as creating. I have been lucky to have quilts and fiber art pieces juried into shows with Missouri Fiber Artists, the American Quilter’s Society in Kentucky, the International Quilt Association in Houston, and the National Quilt Association in Ohio, as well as into many local and regional shows and displays.

I published my first pattern on the Dresden quilt (of course!) in 2015 and my second in 2018. My book Dresden Quilt Blocks Reimagined was published in 2019. I live with my husband, Tom, in both rural Missouri and urban St. Louis with our Golden rescue, Bella. I have two sons who as adults have followed in their father’s footsteps, and we could not be prouder. They are wonderful partners, and I hope I will get to pass on some of my love of quilting in their direction.

    Workshop: Dresden Springtime

These Dresden plates have always reminded me of flowers, or stars or fireworks but mostly flowers. In this class we will make just a few plates, learn some different edge and piecing techniques, explore colors and layout, learn to make bias stems and create our own “gardens”. Ideal for making just a few. Use your favorite “flower” fabrics whether in prints or solids.

Use a solid background or piece one.  Applique by hand or by machine.  Lots of choices but unique and fun.
